Ramsey Tokunbo Nouah Jr. (born December 19, 1970) is a veteran Nigerian actor, director, and producer. Widely regarded as one of the most bankable and enduring talents in African cinema, Nouah initially gained continental fame as Nollywood's quintessential "Lover Boy" in the late 1990s and 2000s. He later transitioned into a highly decorated dramatic actor and an award-winning director, playing a pivotal role in the "New Nollywood" cinematic renaissance.
He won the Africa Movie Academy Award (AMAA) for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2010 for his performance in The Figurine, and won the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Director in 2020 for his directorial debut, Living in Bondage: Breaking Free.
Early Life and Education
Ramsey Nouah was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to an Israeli father and a Nigerian mother of Yoruba descent who hails from Owo, Ondo State. He spent his early childhood in Surulere, Lagos, where he attended Atunrase Boys High School. He later enrolled at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he obtained a diploma in Mass Communication. After his diploma, he opted to pursue a full-time career in acting rather than continuing his formal university degree.
Acting Career
Breakthrough and "Lover Boy" Era (1993–2008)
Nouah’s acting career began in 1993 when he starred in the hit Nigerian television soap opera Fortunes (later renamed Mega Fortunes). He played the role of Jeff, a performance that immediately caught the attention of television audiences.
His transition to the booming Nollywood home-video industry was seamless. Due to his charming on-screen persona and distinctive looks, Nouah was heavily typecast in romantic roles throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, earning him the enduring nickname "Nollywood's Lover Boy." During this era, he starred in dozens of massive commercial hits, including Silent Night, Fugitive, Super Love, and Dangerous Twins (where he played a dual role as good and evil twins, showcasing his dramatic range beyond romantic comedies).
Critical Acclaim and "New Nollywood" (2009–2018)
Determined to shed the "Lover Boy" stereotype, Nouah consciously began accepting darker, more complex, and physically demanding roles as Nollywood transitioned from straight-to-video productions to high-budget cinematic releases.
His watershed moment came in 2009 when he starred as Femi in Kunle Afolayan's supernatural thriller The Figurine. His gripping performance earned him the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.
In 2016, Nouah starred as Captain Joseph Dewa in the historical military drama 76, set against the backdrop of the 1976 Nigerian military coup. The film was a massive critical success, and Nouah underwent rigorous military training for the role. His performance earned him the AMVCA for Best Actor in a Drama in 2017. He also starred in the box office smash hit Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons (2018) and its sequel.
Directorial Career
Having conquered acting, Nouah expanded his repertoire by moving behind the camera. In 2019, he made his highly anticipated directorial debut with Living in Bondage: Breaking Free, a sequel to the 1992 classic Living in Bondage, which is widely credited with birthing the Nollywood industry. The film was a massive critical and commercial success, grossing over ₦160 million at the box office. Nouah's slick, atmospheric direction earned him the Best Director award at the 2020 AMVCAs.
Following this success, Nouah directed Rattlesnake: The Ahanna Story (2020), a remake of another 1990s Nollywood classic. Through his production efforts, Nouah has become a central figure in modernizing and reviving classic Nollywood stories for a contemporary, global audience.
Personal Life
Ramsey Nouah is married to Emelia Philips-Nouah. The couple has three children. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Nouah is known for keeping his family and personal life strictly out of the media spotlight.
