Omotola Jalade Ekeinde (born February 7, 1978) is a pioneering Nigerian actress, singer, philanthropist, and former model. With a career spanning over three decades and appearances in more than 300 films, she is widely regarded as one of the most successful and influential actors in the history of African cinema. Her immense popularity has earned her the press moniker "Omosexy" and "African Magic".
Beyond entertainment, she is deeply involved in humanitarian efforts and was recognized on the Time 100 Most Influential People in the World list in 2013.
Early Life and Education
Omotola Jalade was born in Lagos, Nigeria, into a family of five. She is of Ondo descent and is the eldest child of Oluwashola Jalade, who worked at the YMCA and Lagos Country Club, and Oluwatoyin Jalade (née Amori Oguntade), who worked at J.T Chanrai Nigeria. She grew up with two younger brothers, Tayo and Bolaji.
For her primary and secondary education, she attended Chrisland School, Opebi (1981–1987), Oxford Children School, and Command Secondary School, Kaduna (1988–1993). While she initially harbored ambitions of pursuing business management, she began modeling to earn a living while awaiting her university admission results. She briefly attended Obafemi Awolowo University before eventually completing her tertiary education at the Yaba College of Technology (1996–2004), where she studied Estate Management.
Career
Breakout and Nollywood Stardom
Omotola's acting career began almost by accident when she accompanied a friend to a movie audition in the early 1990s. A director noticed her, and she subsequently landed her first role in the 1993 film Iva, directed by Reginald Ebere. She made her formal Nollywood debut in 1995 with Venom of Justice.
Her critical breakthrough came in 1996 when she starred as Kemi Johnson, a sickle-cell patient fighting for her life, in the classic drama Mortal Inheritance. The powerful performance cemented her reputation as a dramatic powerhouse and earned her the Best Actress in an English Speaking Movie and Best Actress Overall awards at the 1997 THEMA (The Movie Awards). At the time, she was the youngest actress in Nigeria to achieve this feat.
Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Omotola dominated the Nigerian video-film era, starring in massive hits like Lost Kingdom (1999), Blood Sisters (2003), and Games Women Play (2005).
Cinematic Era and International Reach
As Nollywood transitioned from straight-to-video films to cinematic releases, Omotola remained at the forefront. She starred in the 2010 blockbuster Ije: The Journey alongside Genevieve Nnaji, which became the highest-grossing Nollywood film of its time. In 2012, she starred in Last Flight to Abuja, which ranked as the second-highest-grossing film in West African cinemas that year.
Her influence expanded internationally in 2013 when she made her US television debut in VH1's scripted series Hit the Floor. In June 2018, Omotola, alongside fellow Nigerian Femi Odugbemi, was invited to become a voting member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscars).
Music and Reality Television
Refusing to be confined to acting, Omotola launched a music career in 2005 with her debut studio album GBA. She later worked on a sophomore project titled Me, Myself, and Eyes, which featured production from high-profile artists like Paul Play and Del B. She also collaborated with American producers in Atlanta, Georgia, including Drumma Boy and Kendrick Dean, for her musical ventures.
In 2012, she broke new ground by launching Omotola: The Real Me on Africa Magic, becoming the first Nigerian celebrity to headline their own reality television show.
Humanitarian Work and Philanthropy
Omotola is a highly active philanthropist and human rights campaigner. Her primary humanitarian vehicle is her NGO, the Omotola Youth Empowerment Program (OYEP).
She has actively participated in the UN World Food Programme's Walk the World project and joined campaigns alongside former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to raise awareness about global hunger.
