Odunlade Adekola (born December 31, 1978) is a highly celebrated Nigerian actor, singer, film-maker, producer, and director. Widely regarded as the biggest and most recognizable star of the Yoruba-language branch of Nollywood, Adekola is famous for his towering physical presence, unparalleled comedic timing, and incredibly expressive face, which has earned him the unofficial title of "The King of Nigerian Memes."
He won the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Actor in a Comedy in 2018 for his role in A Million Baby, and Best Supporting Actor in 2022 for Jankariwo.
Early Life and Education
Odunlade Adekola was born and raised in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, Nigeria. However, he originally hails from Otun Ekiti, in Ekiti State. His father was a pastor, and Adekola spent his early years deeply involved in his local church activities.
He received his primary and secondary education in Abeokuta, attending St John's Primary School and St. Peter's College. He later earned a diploma from the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY). Determined to further his education despite his already booming acting career, Adekola enrolled at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 2018.
Acting Career
Early Career and Rise to Fame (1996–2005)
Adekola's interest in acting began in 1996 when he joined a local church drama group. He later joined the Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP) under the mentorship of the late Nollywood veteran Isola Durojaiye (popularly known as Alasari).
His major breakthrough in the Yoruba film industry came in 2003 when he played a lead role in the film Asiri Gomina Wa (Our Governor's Secret). His commanding performance set him apart from his peers and quickly made him a household name across southwestern Nigeria.
Yoruba Cinema Dominance and "Meme King" (2006–2018)
Throughout the late 2000s and 2010s, Adekola dominated Yoruba-language cinema. He starred in dozens of massive hits, frequently playing tough, street-smart thugs, comedic village rascals, or wealthy but arrogant elites. Adekola successfully crossed over into mainstream English-language Nollywood cinema, proving his versatility and box-office pull. He delivered critically acclaimed performances in mainstream cinema hits like Elevator Baby (2019), playing an arrogant executive trapped in an elevator.
In 2022, he starred alongside Femi Adebayo in the Yoruba epic blockbuster King of Thieves (Agesinkole), which became one of the highest-grossing Nigerian films of all time.
Directing and Production
Adekola is the founder and CEO of Odunlade Adekola Film Production (OAFP). The production company also serves as an elite acting academy, functioning as a vital training ground for the next generation of Yoruba actors. Several current stars, including Eniola Ajao, Tunde Owokoniran, and Bukunmi Oluwasina, credit OAFP for launching their careers.
