Tolulope Adesua Etomi-Wellington (born February 22, 1988), professionally known as Adesua Etomi, is a highly acclaimed Nigerian actress and singer. Widely regarded as one of the most prominent leading ladies of the "New Nollywood" cinematic era, she is celebrated for her elegance, emotional depth, and impressive box office track record.
She won the prestigious Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Award (AMVCA) for Best Actress in a Drama in 2016 for her heartbreaking performance in the romantic drama Falling, and gained continental superstardom for her role as Dunni Coker in the record-breaking blockbuster The Wedding Party (2016).
Early Life and Education
Adesua Etomi was born in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, to a father of Esan descent who was a soldier, and a mother of Yoruba descent who is an engineer. She is the youngest of three siblings. Etomi developed an interest in acting at the age of seven when she joined the drama club at her primary school, Corona School in Victoria Island, Lagos.
At the age of 13, she relocated to the United Kingdom, where she attended City College Coventry. She later enrolled at the University of Wolverhampton, where she graduated with first-class honors in Drama and Performance in 2009. After graduating, she participated in several theatrical productions in the UK before deciding to return to Nigeria in 2012 to pursue a career in Nollywood.
Acting Career
Screen Debut and Critical Acclaim (2014–2015)
Upon returning to Nigeria, Etomi initially focused on stage plays. Her transition to the screen occurred in 2014 when she was cast as Debbie in her first feature film, Knocking on Heaven's Door, a musical drama produced by Emem Isong. Her performance as a victim of domestic abuse alongside Majid Michel instantly marked her as a rising star in the industry.
In 2015, she landed the lead role of Muna in the romantic drama Falling. Her emotionally devastating portrayal of a woman whose husband is in a deep coma won her universal critical acclaim, earning her the 2016 AMVCA for Best Actress in a Drama against industry veterans.
The Wedding Party and Mainstream Blockbusters (2016–Present)
Etomi was catapulted to unprecedented mainstream fame when she starred as Dunni Coker in the 2016 romantic comedy The Wedding Party, directed by Kemi Adetiba. She played opposite her future real-life husband, Banky W. The film shattered box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Nigerian film of all time, a position it held until it was dethroned by its own sequel, The Wedding Party 2 (2017), in which she reprised her role.
Continuing her streak of high-profile cinematic roles, she starred as Kemi in the gripping political crime thriller King of Boys (2018), and as Zainab in the coming-of-age drama Up North (2018). In 2023, she starred in Jade Osiberu's gritty Amazon Prime original film Gangs of Lagos, portraying a fierce, street-smart hustler, a significant departure from her usual polished roles.
Personal Life
Adesua Etomi is married to popular Nigerian singer, actor, and politician Olubankole Wellington, widely known as Banky W. Their engagement in February 2017 broke the Nigerian internet, as they had kept their relationship entirely secret while starring as an engaged couple in The Wedding Party.
They were married in November 2017 in a highly publicized and lavish ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa (frequently referred to by the hashtag #BAAD2017). They welcomed their first child, a son named Hazaiah, in early 2021.
